Broken Bracket or Poking Wire? What to Do

A poking wire or a loose bracket can be annoying, but true orthodontic emergencies are rare. Here is how to stay comfortable and know when to call our team.

Little bumps in the road are a normal part of treatment, and the good news is that true orthodontic emergencies are rare. Most issues with braces are easy to manage at home for a day or two until we can see you. Here is what to do for the situations our team helps with most often.

A poking wire

As teeth move, a wire can shift and start to poke the inside of your cheek. First, try covering the end with a small ball of orthodontic relief wax, which we send home with you and can always provide more of. Dry the area, pinch off a pea-sized piece, and press it over the spot. If the wire is long and you have clean nail clippers, you can carefully trim the very end, then cover it with wax. Give us a call and we will smooth it properly at your next visit.

A loose or broken bracket

A bracket can come loose if you bite something hard or sticky. If it is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax so it does not rotate or rub. If it comes off completely, save it and bring it with you. A loose bracket is usually not urgent, but call us so we can decide whether to see you sooner or wait for your next scheduled visit.

A lost or cracked aligner

If you wear clear aligners and lose or crack one, do not skip ahead without checking with us. In many cases we will have you move back to your previous aligner to hold your progress, or move forward to the next tray. Call our team and we will tell you exactly what to do so your treatment stays on track.

General soreness

Some tenderness after an adjustment or a new aligner is completely normal and usually eases within a few days. To stay comfortable:

  • Rinse with warm salt water, about a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label
  • Stick to softer foods for a day or two
  • Use relief wax on any spot that is rubbing

When to call us

Call the office if a wire or bracket is causing pain you cannot manage, if something comes loose, or if you are simply unsure. We would always rather hear from you. For any injury with significant swelling, bleeding that will not stop, or trouble breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care right away.

Keep our number handy, and remember that a team who already knows your treatment is ready to help. Request a visit any time you need us.
